The Black Gospel Blog: Sean C. Johnson - Simply a Vessel Vol. 3: Surrender All

JohnsonSimply a Vessel Vol. 3: Surrender Allwww.SeanCJohnson.com
[] By Bob Marovich for The Black Gospel Blog.
TBGB first encountered Sean C. Johnson when the Tampa, Florida-born singer released Simply A Vessel Vol. 2: Faithful. He is back with Volume 3: Surrender All, released April 3.
The third volume continues the “neo soul gospel” of Johnson’s previous opus. He is a talented vocalist who makes singing seem effortless. His go-to groove is a finger-popping bounce, and some selections sound like TSOP sat in on part of the session. The current single, “Who,” is an ideal example of Johnson’s rhythmic but unobtrusive approach to praise and Biblical teaching.
The lyrics on Surrender All feel like conversations with God, whether in worship (“Sweeter”), supplication (“Father I” – nice falsetto runs on this one), or relief for a God who saves us even when we don’t deserve it (“Still Breathing”).
The singer’s sweet spot, however, is his edgy hip hop experimentation. On “Gonna Be,” Johnson teams with Cam, Zack Gaddis and Dre Murray to evoke a bit of Cee Lo Green. “MLMX,” featuring Apoc, is a no-nonsense rap about a broken generation that “don’t know how to act.” Johnson feels responsible for rallying the church troops, and especially today’s parents, to help right the wrong, because “Martin Luther, Malcolm X, they ain’t never coming back.” On “Pass Me Not,” Johnson embeds the classic hymn in hip hop soup as he asks the Lord to keep him strong at a time when things are not making sense.
Speaking of return visits to TBGB, the fetching vocalist Adrianne Archie, whose Heart, Soul, Mind and Strength was reviewed here three years ago, joins Johnson and I AM Franklin on the mellow mover, “Stop and Think.” Their styles are so similar they make for a pleasant combo.
Simply a Vessel Vol. 3: Surrender All retains the positive vibes of the former album, but its flights of compelling hip hop make the overall project stronger than its predecessor.
Four of Five Stars
Picks: “Gonna Be,” “MLMX.”

Gospel Blog: The genius of Mary Mary

They have a hit TV show on WEtv and the #1 album on the Billboard Gospel charts. Everything seems to be going pretty well for Mary Mary these days. While they are entertaining us on TV and ministering to us through music, they are subtly teaching and reinforcing a lesson to everyone. What they are doing is pure genius.

Now, when I say Mary Mary, I don't just simply mean Erica and Tina Campbell. I'm referring to the entire team that makes the Mary Mary machine go. If their TV show has taught us anything, we have learned that there are many people behind the scenes that are responsible for the finished product that we hear on MP3s and see on stage.

We have seen a number of celebrities with their own reality TV show before. Some of them have even been musicians or music industry types. How many of them have had the forethought to release an album during the run of the show? They have even integrated their music into the show. By doing this, they are exposing their music to a completely new audience.

Think about their current album "Go Get It". Like I said before, it is #1 on the Billboard Gospel charts. The album is also #16 on the Billboard top 200 and #3 on the R&B/Hip-Hop charts. That in of itself may not seem too out of the ordinary to you. However, let's consider the songs on the album.

There is no denying that "Go Get It" is a hit song. When you look at that other songs on the album, you'll find that most of them were recored on previous Mary Mary albums. For the most part, these songs aren't even remixes. They sound like the original recordings.

In a day and age where you can easily buy just one song from without buying the entire album, they're topping the charts with an album filled with a bunch of previously recorded music. A big factor for this has to be be because they tied the album and the show together. The new audience from the show means that there are people that may not have heard the "old songs". Therefore people are buying these songs for the first time. This is absolutely brilliant!

There may have been certain factors like pregnancies that prevented them from releasing an album that has more new music. There is a chance that releasing an album full of classics could have been their plan all along. Whatever the original intent was, the end result definitely worked out in their favor.

It is pretty unlikely that we'll see massive amounts of Gospel artists get reality shows. However, one thing we can all learn from what Mary Mary is doing is to take full advantage of every opportunity that is presented in front of us. When opportunities arise in our lives, we really need to figure out what we can do to maximize them.

What are your opinions about what Mary Mary is doing? What do you think about the TV show? What do you think about the new album?

One of the best albums last year was Art Ambidextrous. I heard Propaganda interviewed on DJ Wade-O's show and decided to check his work out. It was a decision I didn't regret. I listened to this album frequently on my bus trips to and from work - so much so that I could lip synch the words backwards. The thing that is notable with the tone of the album is that it hits the sweet spot between theological, spoken word, and “life” Christian hip hop (CHH). While Propaganda and Odd Thomas might not be the first artists to add spoken word into a CHH album, they give solid sign posts for those that want to do it in the future.

Cash & PraiseI Got a Feelin’MCG Records (2009)www.mcgrecords.com
[] By Bob Marovich for The Black Gospel Blog.
For me, the penultimate moment of the live appearance by Apostle J.L. Cash & Praise at the Temple of Deliverance COGIC in Memphiswas when Apostle Cash, the family patriarch, pulled out his left-handed, shiny, green Gretsch electric guitar, lovingly called “MaMa.”
After drawing some bluesy licks out of the Gretsch, Apostle Cash turned it around to show the audience the color photo of his mother that covers the back of the guitar body. Later, guitar in hand, Cash participated in a tongue-in-cheek chat with Mama, gone on home. He’d say how her children were doing on earth, and Mama, anthropomorphized as the guitar, answered back in sassy riffs.
If you have attended the Gospel Brunch at the Orlando, FloridaHouse of Blues recently, you’ve seen Apostle J.L. Cash & Praise in person. If not, the CD and DVD of I Got a Feelin’ are the next best thing.
Apostle Cash leads a team of eight female vocalists, three musicians, and two lithe praise dancers. At times, the group sounds like a quartet and at other times it sounds like a contemporary gospel ensemble. Together, they provide sugar and spice: sweet harmonies with hard-singing leads.
The hard-singing leads are Prophetess Darleena Wright, Apostle Cash, and his daughter, Prophetess April Cash. Wright squalls an alternate ending to MercyMe’s hit, “I Can Only Imagine,” and April boils over on “He Keeps Blessing Me.” The main lead vocalist, Apostle Cash possesses that hoarse, raspy delivery characteristic of a fiery preacher. He also likes to scat in that deep, chesty Rance Allen manner.
It is when the group goes old school that the music really sizzles. Dorsey’s “The Lord Will Make a Way” gets a funky treatment topped with Memphis-style sauciness. The session’s best two songs also classify as traditional: “What Will You Be Doin’ (When Jesus Come)” is driven by a rockabilly-style rhythm that moves along like a locomotive. “Washed by the Water” is a ballad that argues that hard times serve to cleanse the soul and strengthen one's resolve. The DVD contains two ad hoc medleys of classic hymns; neither are on the CD. Likewise, the CD includes the ensemble’s cover of Sam Cooke’s “A Change is Gonna Come” and the complete version of the deep bluesy “Help Me Jesus.”
I Got a Feelin’ is best experienced by viewing the DVD because the program flows with more consistency, while the CD scatters the sweet songs among the spicy. And you get to see the MaMa guitar, a must.
CD: Three of Five StarsDVD: Four of Five Stars
Picks: “What Will You Be Doin’ (When Jesus Come),” “Washed in the Water.”

Survivor Q is a Christian Rapper that puts God first and everything else falls in place. His mission is to reach lost souls for the King.

Jermaine Alexander AKA Survivor Q is a man whose heart hungers for Christ. He uses his music to reach souls and help fill the void that many people crave. Q was not always saved, as a matter of fact he thought he wouldnt make it to see his 20′s. He was in gangs, drugs, alcohol and women. He even lost his brother to the streets. When he realized that everyone around him was either dead or in jail, that was his wake up call. He called on Christ in 2002 and has been walking strong and firm in him ever since. His desire is to spread the true gospel of Jesus to any and everyone that he encounters. Survivor Q uses his gift of music to win souls for the kingdom and uplift the saints. He will continue to spread Jesus’s word until Christ comes back. “Time Running Out, Who you Running With?”

Fresh off her crowning win as New Artist of the Year at the GMA Dove Awards and a recent Billboard Music Awards nomination for Christian Song of the Year, Gotee Records recording artist Jamie Grace’s success continues as her chart-topping song “Hold Me” is featured in Belk’s “Make Mom’s Day This Mother’s Day” TV ad campaign.

A re-recording of the 20-year-old’s GRAMMY® nominated, No. 1 hit “Hold Me,” which she penned alongside her mentor, TobyMac, and producer-writer Christopher Stevens, can currently be heard nationwide in the Mother’s Day commercial advertisement for the leading department store. In addition, the ever-building momentum behind Jamie Grace includes a GRAMMY® nomination, two chart-topping singles and No. 1 status on three different charts (National Audience, AC and CHR), and recent nods to Grace from celebrities including country superstar Reba McEntire and The View co-host Sherri Shepherd. The break-out success of “Hold Me” also assisted in propelling Grace to win her first GMA Dove Award–for New Artist of the Year–at last month’s ceremony, in addition to the recent Billboard Music Award nomination.

“Jamie is a true songwriter, blossoming before my very eyes. She’s such a natural, beautiful next step for our industry,” TobyMac explains, after signing the newcomer to Gotee only one year ago.

Additionally, Jamie Grace recently released her new CHR single, “Come To Me,” to radio. This track follows her previous singles “Hold Me” and “You Lead.” “Hold Me” raked in No. 1’s across the board with a No. 1 at Christian AC Monitored, Christian AC Mediabase, iTunes ® Christian Gospel Songs, Billboard Christian Digital Tracks and Christian CHR. Jamie Grace is one of very few artists to have their debut single go No. 1 on both AC radio charts and CHR. Her second single, “You Lead,” also the No.1 spot on the CHR chart. Jamie Grace released her Gotee debut, One Song At A Time, in September 2011. The project features many tracks that been spotlighted via TV and online placements, including VH1’s Baseball Wives and Basketball Wives LA and online ads for Microsoft’s Dell Inspiron 15R laptop computer.

Coinciding with major press opportunities on the GRAMMY® red carpet with Access Hollywood, EXTRA and Grammy.com, The Associated Press and CNN both recently ran in depth profiles on Jamie Grace. She is currently touring across the country throughout the summer. To view Jamie Grace’s tour schedule, visit here.

Best-selling Christian music artist Casting Crowns wraps the spring leg of its 42-city “Come To The Well” tour. With one of its most successful tours to date, Casting Crowns’ final show alone saw a sold-out audience of more than 16,000 attendees.

Following a hugely successful fall run, including more than 15 sell-out performances, playing before 155,000+ people, the spring leg kicked off Feb. 9, in Florence, S.C. Among its scheduled 42 shows, the tour hit arenas in major markets like New York City, Grand Rapids, Mich., Orlando, Fla., Washington D.C., Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Birmingham, Ala., St. Louis, Mo., Minneapolis and Houston, among others.

The closing date in Houston on Saturday, May 5, marked Casting Crowns’ highest-grossing and most well-attended show ever with 16,000+ concert-goers. Director of KSBJ Special Events, Chris Farnsworth, who promoted the event, comments, “KSBJ Radio was thrilled to host Casting Crowns’ ‘Come To The Well’ tour this weekend. The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavillion was the perfect venue to see over 16,000 members of the Gulf Coast community come together to make this the biggest audience of Casting Crowns’ career.”

A final tally of tour numbers for both fall and spring legs indicate cumulative attendance exceeding 370,000 with 40 sold-out dates making Casting Crowns’ “Come To The Well” tour one of the most successful Christian artist tours of all time.

Holy Culture: Tenth Avenue North Releases Third Studio Project The Struggle Aug. 21

Christian music breakout band Tenth Avenue North announces the unveiling of its third studio project, The Struggle (Reunion Records), on Aug. 21. The 12-track album reflects influences ranging from fan insight from the headlining artists’ past two years on the road, to the addition of two new band members and a new recording process. Produced by six-time SESAC Christian Songwriter of the Year, and two-time GRAMMY nominee, Jason Ingram (Chris Tomlin, Sanctus Real), The Struggle is a bold, creative leap forward.

The Struggle acknowledges life-challenges while pointing to the grace that ultimately delivers us from those challenges. Frontman Mike Donehey shares, “The record’s theme implies permission to struggle with life’s challenges but encourages us not to remain in that place of struggle. Things are going to be hard but we have something greater to look forward to. We are free to struggle, but because of what Christ did on the cross, we don’t need to struggle to be free.”

The album’s debut single “Losing” will impact Christian radio, May 25. The song was inspired by a moving letter sent in to a WAY-FM radio station by a woman struggling with forgiveness; it sums up the idea that we actually lose more than we win when we choose not to extend forgiveness to someone. “Withholding our love doesn’t give us an upper hand in any conflict. ‘Losing’ suggests that we actually end up losing when we don’t offer forgiveness or love,” adds Donehey.

The band has always valued a direct relationship with its fans, and had the idea to bring them into the recording process. Guitarist, Jeff Owen, shares, “On several dates during our last tour we posted invitations on our facebook and twitter pages inviting our fans to show up and lend their voices to some of our songs. The result? We have songs on The Struggle featuring rich choruses made up of our fans. It’s pretty special that we got to do this.”

New members, Ruben Juarez (bass) and Brendon Shirley (keys) were instrumental in the progression of the band’s sound. “Ruben and Brendon are more technically knowledgeable than Jason, Jeff and I are,” says Donehey. “They really added to the musical structure of these songs. Plus, we all get along so well creatively. I couldn’t see doing this record without them.”

Fresh off the “Rock Worship Roadshow” tour, which saw attendance exceeding 230,000, Tenth Avenue North made a featured appearance at the GRAMMY block party in Nashville earlier this week. Known as the event that launches the summer music season, the Block Party gives industry folks a chance to mingle while enjoying a great variety of live music. Other artists scheduled to appear include Luke Bryan, Wynonna, Elenowen, Keb’ Mo’ and The Mavericks.

Wes’ view on the project
“Basically this project is my way of sharing some inner turmoil I went through with balancing how I do my music, with the expectations of folks who support, and the realization that I am now marketed to a totally different base altogether. I started off like a bolt of lightning, and then felt like I ran into some obstacles which caused some frustration and confusion. So the outlook began looking hazy, and I wasn’t sure if I could really see where this was going, hence the title name “Nebulous”. So this little nugget is basically my way of working some things out, starting with ultimately just trusting God that he knows what He’s doing, and the outcome is gonna be blessed regardless. So, like the project shows, this all starts out with me and Him, and ultimately ends with me and Him as well, and from this point I can carry out what I am supposed to do without and worries.”

Check out the project here and the deluxe version here

Worship Leader, Songwriter and Recording Artist Freda Battle has launched her new independent label Peace-O-Mind Music and inked a national distribution deal with leading independent distributor Central South Distribution. Freda Battle & The Temple Worshippers with Friends will release their long-awaited new CD, HOW GLORIOUS AND EXCELLENT IS OUR GOD available in stores and online June 12 via this exclusive partnership. Marketing, promotion and publicity efforts will be handled by the J. Hardy Agency.

Freda Battle & the Temple Worshppers returns to the music scene with their first CD in six years. HOW GLORIOUS AND EXCELLENT IS OUR GOD, which was recorded and streamed live in Boston at Morning Star Baptist Church, where Battle serves as a worship leader proves that she still has more to offer the Gospel music community.

From the high church energy of the title cut “How Glorious & Excellent Is Our God” and the Brazilian infused tune “150 Praises” to the passionate reflection of “His Presence Is Here” and the refreshing latin-flavored praise and worship song “Oh How I Love”, this striking 13-song collection, which features guest appearances from Dove Award-nominated and Stellar Award winning worship artist Stephen Hurd, Rodney Posey, and Bobby Perry (of Bobby Perry & R.A.I.N), is evidence not merely of a collection of great singers, but seasoned ministers.

Other notable songs include “Bless the Name of Jesus”, which is creating quite a buzz among praise and worship teams across the country featuring rising Washington, DC based singer Michael White, who also penned the song. Additionally, a live version of global worship anthem “Here Is Our Praise”, as featured on Battle’s sophomore studio CD HERE IS OUR PRAISE and GMWA: LIVE IN MILWAUKEE CD was recorded.

Vicki Mack Lataillade, who is considered one of the most powerful women in Gospel music and has broken artists such as Kirk Franklin, Kurt Carr and Trin-i-tee 5:7 says, “I have loved Freda Battle since forever! She is the real deal! If you see Freda Battle in her full anointing, you will never be the same!

Freda Battle & the Temple Worshippers are gearing up for promotional stops in support of their forthcoming release throughout the New England and Mid-Atlantic regions beginning in Philadelphia Memorial Day weekend. To book Freda Battle & The Temple Worshippers at your church, event, or conference and for radio servicing and media interviews contact J. Hardy Agency at 615-596-2203.

One King Records’ Matthew “The Collector” Smith has allowed God to use him once more to bring forth an awesome album called “Beautiful Suffering” which will be out in stores on May 21, 2012. From his last album “Your Spiritual Resume”, he has gone through the suffering and the trials of this life, walking as a believer (follower of Christ) in this lost world. While being processed to be used by God and building his spiritual resume, The Collector now glorifies God even more for blessing him and his beautiful wife (Christ-Like) with two beautiful twin boys, which will be on the cover of his new album.

Since The Collector’s previous album, he has grown stronger in his belief, faith and relationship with His Lord & Savior Jesus Christ. In this new album, he encourages all believers in their walk and life circumstances. The Collector’s unique gift also draws non-believers to try Jesus as their Lord and Savior. He goes in depths about his personal testimonies in most of his songs, such as “Pain Away”, “iLove”, “Me-n-You”, “You My Lord”, “Can You Hear Me”, “Potter’s Wheel”, and many more. He is not just preaching, but he is testifying of God’s goodness keeping him through the hard times. You will hear other featured artists such as Christ-Like (Wife), Jprotege, Vision, Special Effect, a new addition God’s Wife (GW) and I, Sista Kaye. Album Co-Produced by Federico a.k.a “Manger”, who is also featured on The Collector’s Mixtape “FaithBook”. This album is uplifting and the beats are hot! Look out for “Beautiful Suffering”, drops May 21, 2012. The new single “Potter’s Wheel” ft. GW is now available online for purchase in iTunes Stores or Google Play. Let’s support our brother in Christ, and help win souls for the Kingdom of God. God Bless you.

Holy Culture: Channel’s fourth studio album “Sounds of a Dreamer” drops on 6/12/12

The Red Ink Movement is excited to announce the forthcoming release of Channel’s fourth studio album Sounds of a Dreamer on 6.12.12. This album is aggressively Jesus. It’s a potent collection of songs aimed at inspiring and re-igniting your passion to press toward your dreams in faith through the lens of scripture. The project is reminiscent of his first breakout album Dare 2 Be Great which was highly regarded by artists such as Lecrae and Trip Lee. It includes production from some of the dopest producers in the game, including Halo of AirTight Productions (KB, Dillon Chase), Tony Stone (Lecrae, Trip Lee), DeeOnTheTrack (Json), Marv4MoBeats (R-Swift, Pro, Canton Jones), Prayer Life Media, and up and comer ChrysBeats.

Many of us have dreams of doing something great in life. Some are noble, others are rooted in selfishness and the praise of man, and some are a combination of both. God has great plans for our lives and He wants to use us in ways that bring Him Glory. You ever feel insignificant, like what you’re doing doesn’t really matter? You pray and read, and most of the time, things just don’t seem to work out the way we want them to. What do our dreams and goals look like in the grand scheme of things? Tune in to Channel as he shares his inspiration and heart on these matters. Sounds of a Dreamer drops June 12th, 2012. We hope this album would inspire you to go hard this summer! Team Red Ink.

You can help us change lives and win cool stuff at the same time! In fact, your role in this project is super important. We need your help to make it go viral!!! We’re giving away some cool items including a KINDLE FIRE sponsored by HolyCulture.net and several cds, wristbands, and t-shirts. Every week we’ll be looking at random Facebook posts and tweets for winners leading up to the release.

Here’s your chance to help change lives and tell your friends and family about the album and the Red Ink Movement. Use the Facebook and twitter tools below to tell your friends about it!

UPDATE: "Nebulous" has reached the Top 10 on Bandcamp, currently sitting in the #8 spot. Let's keep pushing!

Monday evening Illect Recordings artist Wes Pendleton released a "pay what you want" style album called Nebulous on Bandcamp. There is also a deluxe edition available for only $5. All beats were be Wes and he is joined by a few special guests.

Here's what Wes had to say, "Basically this project is my way of sharing some inner turmoil I went through with balancing how I do my music, with the expectations of folks who support, and the realization that I am now marketed to a totally different base altogether. I started off like a bolt of lightning, and then felt like I ran into some obstacles which caused some frustration and confusion. So the outlook began looking hazy, and I wasn't sure if I could really see where this was going, hence the title name "Nebulous". So this little nugget is basically my way of working some things out, starting with ultimately just trusting God that he knows what He's doing, and the outcome is gonna be blessed regardless. So, like the project shows, this all starts out with me and Him, and ultimately ends with me and Him as well, and from this point I can carry out what I am supposed to do without and worries."

Perception vs. reality. A core mental struggle since Adam and Eve’s perception of “becoming like God” betrayed the reality of death that awaited them (and mankind). Perception played a central role in the crucifying of our Lord Jesus, only to watch Reality ascend to the heavens. And, of course, the perception that an outfit is a strong determinant of how much you really are devoted to the Lord. Ultimately, Lecrae’s much anticipated, celebrated, and hated on project Church Clothes, is an audio study of perception vs. reality. Let’s take a closer look at what was both correctly and incorrectly percieved about this release.

Dr. Clay Evans founded the church more than sixty years ago.
Fellowship's first minster of music was Willie Webb, an original Roberta Martin Singer and sometime accompanist for Mahalia Jackson. Rev. Milton Brunson, founder of the Thompson Community Singers, sang solos with the Fellowship choir, known as the “Ship.” Legend has it Sam Cooke attended services at Fellowship. The Ship's commitment to the traditional Chicagosound earned it many awards and accolades over the years.
Evans has retired, but Fellowship remains on the gospel music charts, courtesy of a praise and worship anthem called “Awesome,” written by the church’s new pastor, Rev. Charles Jenkins.
Jenkins spoke with TBGB about becoming the second pastor in Fellowship’s 62-year history, the new single, and the church’s forthcoming CD.
Jenkins was born in St. Petersburg, Floridaand grew up attending 10th Street Church of God. “That’s all I knew until I became a teenager,” he said. “But there was a Baptist church in the neighborhood where there was a choir. Everybody was a member, so that piqued my interest.”
Jenkins later served as minister of music for Bethel AME in St. Petersburg and was licensed to preach at sixteen years old. Two years later, he was ordained at Mount Zion Progressive Baptist Church. “In my first year of preaching the gospel,” Jenkins recalled, “I must have gotten over 70 invitations, so I was speaking all over the place.”
He had taken seven years of classical piano lessons, and even considered minoring in music in college, “but the pulpit overwhelmed the piano and I zeroed in on the Bible.”
Still, music was rooted deep in the minister’s soul. “I was writing songs, but I had not formally thought about placing them on albums or shopping them,” he said. “It wasn’t until Teddy Campbell—the drummer on the Tonight Show—and his wife, Tina Campbell—one half of Mary Mary—heard my stuff and told me I should do something with it. Then Israel [Houghton] heard it and said the same thing.”
Israel recorded Jenkins’ “You’ve Been a Friend” as part of his GRAMMY Award-winning album, Israel and New Breed - Alive in South Africa.
Jenkins describes his becoming pastor of Fellowship as a “God story.”
He arrived in Chicagoin January 1996 to study at Moody Bible Institute. “I was sitting at my desk during summer school in May of 1996 when the Lord placed it on my heart that I would lead Fellowship. Now, I didn’t know of Fellowship, I didn’t know Rev. Clay Evans. I told my mother and my girlfriend (now my wife) and one of my dearest friends, Pastor Craig Oliver, that the Lord put this word, ‘Fellowship,’ in my mind and said that I would lead a church there. Pastor Oliver knew Rev. Evans and he thought I was crazy!”
Meanwhile, the African American Religious Connection (AARC), a consortium Evans had created, was looking to build up its youth division. The AARC called Jenkins to see if he would be interested in working with this new division. Jenkins put a proposal together.
“I showed up at the church to drop [the proposal] off, but I ended up presenting my proposal that day at a meeting that I had no idea was taking place.” Among the meeting attendees was Evans himself. Jenkins recalled: “In his own words, Rev. Evans said that at the moment I opened my mouth, God yelled in his ear: ‘That’s your successor.’
“Little did I know that the church had been praying for five years for a successor. God ordered my steps and ordered his, and here I am, almost twelve years being the Senior Pastor. It’s a humbling honor.”
One of Jenkins's many pastoral duties was creating a record label for the church called Inspired People. The label recently signed an exclusive worldwide distribution agreement with EMI Gospel/EMI Christian Music Group. Pastor Charles Jenkins Presents Fellowship Chicago Live’s debut project, The Best of Both Worlds, will be in stores and available online June 12, 2012.
The hit single, “Awesome,” is already available via digital outlets and hit the Billboard Top Gospel Songs chart. It is currently #7.
“’Awesome’ is a celebration of who God is and what He does,” Jenkins said. “It’s a worship song that’s easy to sing, and everybody has a testimony of why God is awesome. It has been phenomenal as people all around the world—from Africa to Europe to the islands—are singing out that He moves mountains and hides us from the rain.”
Like “Awesome,” most of the songs on the album are newly-composed. EMI gospel artist Anita Wilson, who is worship leader at Fellowship, leads “Praise On My Mind” and “Worthy Is Your Name.”
Then there is the “Fellowship Medley.”
Jenkins explained: “Rev. Evans recorded 25 albums, and so I wanted our album to open with a tribute to some of the best of Fellowship’s music history. The church’s theme song, ‘What a Fellowship,’ opens the record. I am very humbled and honored that Rev. Clay Evans is singing that song on this record. His sister, longtime music minister LouDella Evans Reid, comes in on the second part of the medley to lead ‘New Name in Glory,’ which is a foot-stomper. It closes with ‘I’ve Got a Testimony,’ which is a house-shaker! We got them all in seven minutes of foot-stomping, hand-clapping from beginning to end!”
What does Pastor Jenkins hope people come away with, upon hearing the album?
“I hope people come away with a sense of a love for God, a commitment to sing to Him, and a personal deep devotion. I also hope they feel a sense of unity within the body of Christ, with both old-schoolers and new-schoolers, long-timers and newcomers, and what it means for us to all sing to God together.”
For more information, visit www.fellowshipchicagomusic.com

Full Ride Music Group recording artist, Thi’sl, has had the hip-hop scene buzzing with his most recent musical works. From his release of Beautiful Monster, which debuted No. 4 on the iTunes hip-hop charts, No.24 on Billboard Rap Charts, all while being completely indie. Now, with his music video release for “Hey Moma,” Thi’sl proceeds to supply his audience with quality work that points to an even more superior message.

Thi’sl’s “Hey Momma” is a song that celebrates the strength, beauty, and importance of women and mothers everywhere. As a kid growing up in the hood, Thi’sl witnessed how countless women in the community endured many hardships in an effort to open doors for the next generation. Overworked and many times fatigued, these women gave of themselves to benefit others. However, a lot of them failed to receive the proper gratitude and appreciation they deserved for the efforts.

After two mixtapes and a host of other releases, Ms. Melody Monroe (formerly Mel Monroe) has released her debut single on Itunes! The single, entitled “Ladies Room”, is an anthem for women all over the world to celebrate the life God has destined for them. Monroe presents an innovative rhyme scheme over an old-school instrumental reminiscent of 1970′s music. The song is produced by North Carolina based Jehovah Jireh Production and features singer/songwriter Lavarrick who adds exquisite harmonies and a fun chorus to the collaboration. Ladies Room is being released in preparation for Monroe’s newest mixtape “Return of the Lady” which is set to release in July.

The best veterans in any field eventually learn the importance of focused improvements. When you hear an athlete talk about how he is going to focus on a very specific area of his game during the offseason, people who know the game well enough to understand the importance of the improvement may get a justified chill. There's a point where you're set in your mold, whether it was self-imposed or self-created, and you focus on texturing the model you have in front of you instead of scrapping the statue entirely and starting from scratch. Yaves, formerly known as Street Pastor, falls into this category. He's been in the game for around thirteen years and he knows his lane. His hard work has recently paid off in the form of signing a deal with Xist Music, home to Ambassador and D.A. Truth. And in "History in Progress," the first tape to come out of the partnership, Yaves debuts a leaner, humbler, hungrier (if that was possible) product of self.

Compassion International is a Christian child development organization dedicated to releasing children from poverty. Their ministry is twofold: They work through local churches to provide child development programs to deliver children from economic, physical, social and spiritual poverty, enabling them to become responsible, fulfilled Christian adults. And they speak out for children in poverty — informing, motivating, and equipping others to become advocates for children. With a heart passionate about spreading hope to the hopeless, SECOND has decided to release this song to expose its hearers to the great, Christ-centered work this non-profit organization has been doing around the world for a long time in hopes to motivate people to get involved by sponsoring at least one child out of poverty in Jesus’ name. For more information on Compassion International, visit their website at www.Compassion.com.

(If you’re wondering where HillaryJane is, she is definitely still with us. She is just taking a break from music right now to strengthen her relationship with God, she will be doing music again very soon!)

This is a lyrical exposition via the medium of Hip-Hop of Ephesians 3:14-21

14 For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, 15 from whom every family[c] in heaven and on earth is named, 16 that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.20 Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

When most people think of Aretha Franklin, gospel music usually isn't the first thing that comes to mind. The queen of soul will now be joining 6 other people that will be inducted into the GMA Gospel Music Hall of Fame on Aug. 14 in Herndersonville, Tenn. Other inductees include: Ricky Skaggs, The Hoppers, Dallas Holm, the late TV evangelist Rex Humbard and Christian rock band Love Song.

Franklin began singing gospel for her father who was a Baptist minister. In 1972, her album "Amazing Grace" sold over 2 million copies. This makes it one of the best-selling gospel albums of all time.

There are currently over 150 members of the GMA Gospel Music Hall of Fame. It was established in 1971.

WEtv has decided to renew the original series "Mary Mary" for a second season.

This ten episode series features the lives of Gospel sensations Erica and Tina Campbell. Season 2 will go into production this month, with anticipation of being released in early 2013.

The "Mary Mary" series has been a huge success. It has been a key asset in WEtv's mission to reach an audience of African American Women.

It is good to see a TV series that shows African American women in a positive light. It is also good to see the public embrace positive images of women and African American culture. There are so many negative images of African Americans on television. Let's hope that the "Mary Mary" series proves to be an example to TV executives that African Americans will embrace and support positive images.

Holy Culture: Travis Ryan Debut Album, Fearless, Gathers Acclaim

California’s Saddleback Church worship leader Travis Ryan released his debut album, Fearless, through Integrity Music on April 10. Featuring songs co-written with Matt Redman, Jason Ingram, Brenton Brown, Ben Cantelon, All Sons Daughters, Dan Bailey and others, the album is receiving wide critical acclaim. “Best album I’ve heard this year! Unbelievable!” tweets New York Times No. 1 best-selling author and pastor Rick Warren to his 592,000 followers as Worship Leader Magazine says, “…Travis Ryan comes out guns blazing… This is spiritual battle music, from both sonic and songwriting perspectives.”

In addition to his “regular” album available on iTunes®, Ryan created a special iTunes “LP” that features several bonus tracks. With consumers weighing in with 5-star reviews on iTunes, here is what the critics are saying about Fearless:

“Fearless is immediately off to a great start with the hard-hitting ‘Love That Has Won’ and ‘Battle Song.’ The production value here is especially high…As a studio recorded worship effort, the innate musical power of the album never feels forced or canned…the album has an epic feel…” – JesusFreakHideout.com

“If you’re a worship leader looking for some new songs that will light a fire in the hearts of your people, Travis Ryan’s Fearless is a great start. Each song is full of truth and praise to a God who loves and expects His children to live out what they believe, which in essence is true worship.” – NewReleaseTuesday.com

“With these worshipful outpouring lyrics and heartfelt melodies, this album is a must for people who love to lift their hands up in the air and just embrace God’s love…Travis Ryan has produced a very elegant album…” – Louder Than The Music

“…Travis Ryan has captivated me with every song… a breath of fresh air that is revitalizing and enjoyable to listen to.” – ChristianMusicZine.com

“…a project full of the love and power of God that casts out fear and torment…. Travis writes in such a way that it is impossible to listen to this project without considering God’s love in a way you have never considered it before.” – JaysMusikBlog.com

“Travis’s new release will touch the hearts of many… Fearless is designed to take the listener through a journey…” – Examiner.com

“Because these songs remind me of all that I lose sight of when I am letting my fears take the foothold, the album becomes more than just another praise record in my collection. Fearless is strong and bold; a collection of songs that resonates deeply and inspires greatly.” – Relate Magazine

“Fearless is a topnotch album with amazing everything: vocals, lyrics, instrumentals, production, engineering, etc… one of the top worship albums of the year, and one I would recommend checking out.” – Christian Music Review Blog

Sharing the message and music of his new album, Ryan launched the new project with a special Fearless release event at Saddleback Church April 15. At the event, Redman joined Ryan to sing the song they wrote together for the album, “Chase,” and pastor Warren, who endorsed Ryan, delivered a message. (Ryan is pictured at the event below.)

Ryan was also featured at the National Day of Prayer event held May 3 in Washington, DC, leading six worship songs between speakers like Dr. David Jeremiah, Dr. and Mrs. James C. Dobson, Bishop Harry Jackson, Mrs. Vonette Bright and others. “What an honor!” exclaims Ryan, who will be featured at the National Worship Leaders Conference being held in Leawood, KS (Kansas City) July 16-19 and San Diego October 9-11 (www.nationalworshipleaderconference.com).

Ryan will further be joining Phil Wickham at four “Singalong Tour 2012” events beginning this week in Chandler, AZ (5/8), and traveling to Glendale, AZ (5/9), Tucson, AZ (5/10) and Las Vegas, NV (5/11).

Produced by Ryan’s band mate, Josh Auer (PAX217), additional band members Dan Bailey (Fiction Family, Phil Wickham) and Brandon Collins join in to create the resulting melodic, dynamic rock influenced worship on Fearless. GRAMMY Award winners Adam Hawkins (Switchfoot, Natasha Bedingfield, 50 Cent) and Chris Testa (Jimmy Eat World, Mat Kearney, The Goo Goo Dolls) mixed and engineered respectively as Kevin Bartley (Red Hot Chili Peppers, B.B. King, Queensrÿche) mastered the album. OneRepublic’s Brent Kutzle also added his talents to “Awaken Us.” The resulting original music from Ryan is meant to inspire people to press on past fear, becoming courageous and marked by God’s boldness.

In addition to Saddleback Church, Ryan has led worship for such organizations as Campus Crusade for Christ, Student Venture, The Purpose Driven Life Worship Conference and at numerous universities. He has spent time as an associate producer for Marantha Music and was born into a musical family – Ryan’s father wrote songs for Maranatha during the Jesus movement.
